Sony YY2951 shows up on Korean FCC (update 2)

Sony YY2951

Looks like Sony will have another wireless headset this year to complement the WF-1000XM4 and YY2952. Unknown what this is, could be a low end device, as it is made in Vietnam (see update).

Update 2

The YY2951 has appeared on Bluetooth SIG, confirming the MT2822S SoC. Bluetooth 5.2 will be supported like the new WF-1000XM4. For comparison the WF-1000XM4 appeared on Bluetooth SIG in early April, and it was announced in early June. So maybe 2 months from now, early September is when these will debut.  The FCC short term confidentiality has not changed, so perhaps maybe closer to a Holidays 2021 debut?

Update 1

The model has surprisingly appeared on the FCC, and now we know this is not a TWS headset but an over-the-ear headset thanks to the label document. The photo does not reveal much, except that noise cancellation is included. The short term confidentiality ends on December 11th, so quite a ways off, but I feel this will be unveiled earlier with even the short term confidentiality date possibly being moved up like the WF-1000XM4.

The antenna type is a chip antenna, similar to the WH-1000XM4. The one main piece of information the filing reveals is the Bluetooth SoC used, the Mediatek MT2822S, or Sony's new V1 Integrated processor.

So this noise cancelling headset will be sporting the new V1 chip and noise cancellation but I do not expect Sony to use dual NC mics, similar to the WH-H910N and WH-XB900N. So rather than a low end device, perhaps this is a mid-high end device? Could Sony have moved the production of these high end models from China (WH-XB900N) or Malaysia (WH-H910N) to Vietnam?

Of course this could just be a replacement for the WH-CH710N, with Sony utilizing the new Bluetooth SoC to save on development/production costs and easier firmware updates. Apart from this, I do not see much else in the documents. With no physical IFA show this year, this headset along with the YY2952 will be unveiled probably with press releases. These 2 new headsets could be the beginning of Sony slowly replacing their lineup. I would love to see a new WI-1000XM3, but I feel Sony is sticking with TWS and over-the-ear headsets for now.

Update 2:

The model has appeared on the Canadian certification site, but nothing new is revealed. I do wonder if we will get more devices this year or Sony will wait for LE audio next year.

So we are either looking at the WH-CH720N, WH-H920N (h.ear on 4), or WH-XB910N. My guess is this is the WH-CH720N, but perhaps it is a completely different model all together. Post your thoughts below.

And for those curious, no new Walkman information which is unfortunate. Hopefully something soon will appear on the FCC. The WM1-Series has been discontinued but this does not mean a new model is coming to replace it.

  1. I own the wh-ch510 and wi-sp510, would really like to see a new wi-sp510, but would be happy with a new version of the wh-ch510

  4. Sorry, stupid question, could it be possible that these are the WH-1000XM5?
My reasoning is that there was only a year gap between previous models, except the WH-1000XM4. I think the WH-1000XM4 might have been scheduled for early 2020 but got delayed due to the pandemic. With more competition in the high end now, Sony needs to respond faster imo

    1. a high end model like the WH-1000XM5 wouldn't be manufactured in Vietnam, but Malaysia.
