Could the Sony WF-C500 (YY2952) and YY2951 be delayed?

Sony YY2951

There is a report from Nikkei Asia that Apple is moving Airpods 3 production out of Vietnam to China due to recent Covid-19 outbreaks in country. Two upcoming Sony wireless headphones will be produced in Vietnam, the YY2951 and YY2952 (WF-C500). The plant in question looks to be the Dong Van 4 plant in Vietnam according to the YY2951 certification documents with the manufacturer being ZDL. Could both of these new products be delayed?

While I have no information about any delays, if Apple, Amazon and Google are all experiencing production issues in Vietnam, I would venture to guess a similar problem has affected Sony. With this Vietnamese factory being an OEM/ODM factory, Sony does not have much control over the production and if has to close, it will close. Add to this the current electronic parts shortage, I would imagine Sony is having a tough time getting things produced.

Perhaps the parts shortage is also why we still have not seen any certification filing of the leaked new WM1-Series successor. It has been a month since the leak and no certification filings, perhaps they have been filed and we will just need to wait now.

I do not expect Sony to comment on this, they do not really answers any emails I send them, so we can only speculate if these new headphones will appear when they are supposed to, or they will be delayed. The short term confidentiality dates have not changed for either the YY2951 or YY2952, so perhaps there is no delay. While these are not high end premium devices, any delays on these models could also impact other models like new Walkmans, like the WM1-Series successor, or other premium wireless headphones.

  1. would be bad if any new walkmans would be delayed. Maybe the WF-C500 would be a nice budget pair of wireless buds for the gym.

  2. Wonder if there will be WI-1000XM3 this year or not.
Still love the neck band design.

    1. I doubt it, it would have appeared on the FCC already, if it appears in the next month or 2, perhaps we would see a December release, but I would venture to guess we will see more in January. Would love to see a new WI-1000XM3
