Another Sony wireless headset has appeared on Bluetooth SIG, code YY2966. The Bluetooth version is 5.2 but looking at the supported layers, there is no support for "Isochronous Adaptation Layer", which is indicative of LE Audio. So this might end up being either a low/mid level device or perhaps an over the ear headset where LE Audio is not as important versus in a small in-ear headset.
The Bluetooth chipset is most likely the Mediatek MT2822, but the certification also shows the MT2833, along with a few Airoha versions like AB1562M and AB1536. If it is a high end device, then the MT2822 is a good bet, but if it ends up being a low/mid level headset we can expect the Airoha AB1562M, which was used in the WF-C500.
This is all of the information I have now, my guess is this either the WH-XB710 or WI-SP520. Since there is no noise cancellation, it cannot be the WH-CH720N (see correction below). But of course it could end up being something else all together, knowing how Sony operates.
Update:
Lucky us, this unknown device has appeared on the FCC. The short term confidentiality ends on March 23rd, 2023, so a while off still. Of course Sony could reveal it earlier. The label document does show this to be an over the ear headset, but not much of the design is revealed.
We can see something peculiar here though, the headset will be made in 2 places, China and Vietnam. I could be mistaken, but this is the first time I see something like this from Sony. I do wonder the 2 different versions will vary in their build quality, hopefully this will not be the case.
Second, while the document does not reveal the model name, but we know it will be a "Wireless Noise Canceling Stereo Headset", which might point to this being the new WH-CH720N, rather than WH-XB710.
The battery inside is a 3.85V unit and we do have the capacity from the filing. There will be 2 suppliers of the battery and while I have seen this before in older models, recently this has not been the case. We can see the capacity is 520mAh, at 3.85V, which is 2.0Wh. Unfortunately I do not have the capacity of the current model. Thinking back to all my previous posts, I do not recall ever seeing the capacity of the battery in an FCC filing before, perhaps this is because there are 2 suppliers?
There are 2 more photos in the filing, supposedly showing the actual headset earcup along with some measurements. Below is the first photo, showing some of the design, but more interesting is the presence of what looks to be a NC microphone above the driver. This would suggest we will get dual NC, like the previous model.
So that is all from the filing. It looks like we have the WH-CH720N replacement. I am wondering why the Bluetooth SIG filing has no noise cancellation in its description, so perhaps an error from Bluetooth SIG's side.
Update 2:
The headset has appeared on the Canadian certification site.
