Firmware Update to version 4.03.00 for NW-ZX500/NW-A100 series

Firmware Update Sony A-Series and ZX-Series Walkman
The new update brings only security updates, up to May 2021. If you are updating your device for the first time, this update will include all previous updates as well.

So far no news about any new Walkman models, hopefully something shows up soon, otherwise, next year. For those waiting for new models, what would you prefer, Android OS or Sony's own OS? Do you use streaming apps like spotify much? Or load your own music on them?

  1. Hopefully Sony will release a new player with Sony's own OS come September; I gave up on Android due to horrible battery drain issues. Been using Pioneer, Hiby, Fiio players based on Android - all with excellent sound quality but had to charge them daily. If Sony can create something like Cowon Plenue D in terms of battery life (100 hours MP3 or 60 hours FLAC)... Still remember carrying around a PD and charging it once a month. Thank you for maintaining this Walkman Blog; lots of useful stuff here.

    1. I agree. It's an excellent blog, very very useful. Thanks, Ascariss, for keeping it up.

  2. I use Google Podcasts. The main issue with it is the internal storage and the bad battery life. I otherwise feel that it's much smoother than I thought when I bought it.

    1. So would I, but how would it handle streaming services? I gather it must not be easy to solve. Why would a streaming service devote resources to develop an app for a proprietary OS with a few users?

  4. Any update for WF1000XM4?

  5. Sony's own OS is better because of battery life. I don't use any streaming service and need a pure DAP.

  6. I Do Not Stream I Load My Songs On My 3 Sony Players {A105 ,A55 ,A17} Battery Life Is Awful On A105 , I Just Ordered A Fiio M11 Plus LTD To Try But I Love Sony , 4.03.00 Firmware Takes Longer For My A105 To Load I Find , All My Players Have A 1TB Card , I Like My A17 The Best , I Can Use One Hand To Operate The Player , I Can Not Wait For The New Hi End Walkman To Come I Will Buy For Sure Regardless Of Cost , Thanks For This Blog

  7. I prefer a new walkman with Sony OS.
Severe battery drain on Android OS. Also need a simple music player, not a phone without camera (which is basically what a DAP is)

    1. Love Sony OS and WM1A has a great battery life, but so has ZX2 with Android...

    2. I cannot comment on those $1200 DAP. But comparing between the A55 and A105, the battery on the A105 is horrible.
Moreover the presence of Android presents more distractions from music.
A very good analogy - I would never want my kindle to run Android.

  8. I'm considering the A105 right now, but I'm hesitant due to battery life. I love the A55 but do find myself using spotify and google podcasts, which A105 can do easily.

I'm also very into the Google ecosystem so an android based music device sounds good, battery life aside. That said If there's no sim card and it's wifi only, then I'm probably not far from a power source and being USB-C also makes it bearable.

  11. I bought the EU variant of this ZX507, realizing far too late about the volume cap on it... Even with me "upgrading" from my A45, I removed the volume limiter on that. Being unable to change my mind, I'm sorta stuck with this thing now.

It's not bad, but the output on the A45 is still superior, Even when both have their compatible Sony headphones in (NW500N with the A45 and SPH90C with the ZX507) the EU enforced volume limit just steps down the ZX507.

Does anyone know if this limit is enforced in the hardware? Or is it just software based. Can't I just do what iPhone owners do to get around the EU volume limitations. Connect to VPN in a country that doesn't have a limit, download and install firmware on my device like that.

I've tried factory resetting on the device whilst connected to a VPN... That didn't really work. It just installed EU firmware again...

  12. For me I have the NW-A105 I like the android system and being able to load my streaming app on to it I use Qobuz I wouldn’t buy one of these if there was no streaming app option as I don’t want to have to buy all the music I listen to

Those saying about the battery being poor I usually plug my Walkman in when using it in the car and at home I also carry an extra USB battery pack around so when I’m out that powers it as well so I don’t really have battery life issues

I don’t want Sony to drop the android OS either because I don’t want a Player with no option for my Qobuz app maybe they could release two versions one with android and one with Sony custom OS

But they need to offer more internal memory as 16GB is quite shocking these days

  13. Hello, my nw-zx507 (northamerican version) has a PIN, which I can't unlock and there doesn't seem to way of doing a button reset. Is there a way of flashing the firmware, maybe with flash tool?

    Thank you
