Sony Walkman Service Menu Access (Update 2016)

*Update* - Posted new instructions, thank you Robert
Here is how to access the service menu in the S-Series, E-Series and A-Series.  Before anyone tries this, I caution you that you may brick your player and stop it from working.

If anything goes wrong during the process, I recommend you press the reset button on the back of the device in order to reset it.  Unfortunately there is no guarantee that the reset will work.  So please use this at your own discretion.

Seems there is a new way to get into the A860 service menu.  I have tried this on my A845 and entering the code does not enter the service menu.

Previous instructions after the break.

1. Make sure you are on the main menu.2. Put the player on Hold
3. Press the following keys in order:

4. If done right the machine will turn off and back on and load a colour bar, press any button to get off the colour bar and into the service menu.

Another older method is posted below:

1. Go to the main menu of the player
2. turn Hold ON
3. now press these keys in order

The player should restart and go into the service menu, turn Hold OFF and then find the Audio settings menu.

To exit the Test mode, go the main selection screen then press
up/down and select EXITTEST then press right and select SURE, finally press the play/pause button, turn the power off and release the test mode

I am not responsible if your player stops working or if you encounter any errors.

Instructions for the older E430 Walkman below:

  1. what does accessing the service menu allow you to do?

  2. in older EU walkmans, one could remove the volume limit and have a normal sounding player. Current EU players are more harder to hack, but I am sure there has to be a way.

  3. oohh yes ive heard of the volume cap. do you know if the volume cap is really bad because my dad is thinking of getting the new A series Walkman but since it's not available in Australia anymore we can only get hold of an EU model (Japanese model doesn't have english GUI).
On my X Walkman we would only listen to music at around 8 or 9 volume max. Usually around 6-7.
    thanks

    ReplyDelete
  4. well i use the X myself also bought in europe, and I never go above 15 in my volume, so you should be fine.

    ReplyDelete
  5. I did it but... now i can't listen the radio!!!! ='(

    ReplyDelete
  6. Press the reset button, it should restore the radio but as I mentioned before, accessing the service menu has it's dangers.

  9. Hi there, I don't believe there is a way to fix it, but some users have had success at entering the service menu again and playing around in the radio settings to get back to 108Mhz

    ReplyDelete
  10. Does it works for the A845? I want to remove the EU audio limit.

  11. i have the s638F and somehow i don't get into the service menu... any tips? may it be charged during the procedure, has the song to be on pause or play?

    ReplyDelete
  12. It is possible to get back the Volume cap and make the radio work again?

    ReplyDelete
  13. Some have claimed that they have the radio working and the volume cap gone but from what I know, the radio will only then go up to 90Mhz and not the full range like the rest of the world.

Some people have played around in the service menu and claim it is possible to reset the radio and keep the volume high, but enter the service menu at YOUR own risk.

  14. i haven't found a solution yet! there's no solution and it's impossible to restore the default setting

  15. Hello

I have an E455 that I desperately want to make louder before I throw it through Sony's HQ window. Could anyone give me clear specific instructions on how to enter the service menu? I have tried the instructions that have been posted but to no avail! I would be ever so grateful and you would be saving me all the court costs etc

    ReplyDelete
  16. Hi there, currently there is no method to make the units louder.

Some users have succeeded but then the radio does not work or works incorrectly.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Hi

Thanks for your reply. I never listen to the radio so that really wouldn't be a problem for me! Do you know what they did?

    ReplyDelete
  18. Hi there, the instructions above should work for the E series as most users have claimed it works for most the walkman series'.

Once you enter the service mode, do the following:

then go to audio, and then to maxout ,i rly dont remember what i pressed but now its written: AUDIO MAXOUT
    1khz 0dbs L/Rch
    HPOUT [vol:30]
    AVLS OFF

    then go to NMLRZ
and the option looks like this :AUDIO NMLRZ
    1khz -24dBs L/Rch
    HPOUT [VOL: 30]

    via: http://anythingbutipod.com/forum/showpost.php?p=540400&postcount=8

    others have done the following:

    -VOLUME
in the service menu select DAC and then BGAIN and TGAIN (bass and treble gain[i use max 6 db gain and i cannot listen to music over 15, it hurts!]) submenu increase or decrease these values

I have the E455, too. But if I go to main menu then go to hold mode and then press the keys, nothing happens!!
What do I do wrong? Do I have to do anything before this whole thing??

  21. Hi there, try this

press back button for 1.5 seconds, then set the HOLD to ON, then while pressing the option key press the following keys:

    [BACK] → [up] → [right] → [down] → [left] → [up] → [up] → [right] →
    [down] → [left] → [play/pause]

    this should hopefully work

  25. Anybody knows how to acces to service menu with a NWZ-B153F model???

    thaks in advance

    ReplyDelete
  26. @Zecke, I am not sure what one has to change, changing things in the service menu can be dangerous and may stop the player from working altogether.

I am not aware if there is a service mode for the B series, but I have not seen it anywhere, sorry.

Btw I have tried testing this service menu access for the new E460 Walkman but it did not work, perhaps I was entering it wrong, or the sequence of buttons has changed.

  35. Hi.

I'm having troubles with my e455 when connected to a computer, it's very unstable: most of the time the computer cannot identify my Walkman and I can't transfer music.

I tried everything obvious (change cable, port, format, reset, etc) but my player is not recognized on every single computer I tried (3).

Do you know if there is something on service menu that I can play with to fix this behavior?

    Thank you in advance.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Hmm this is odd, it should not cause such issues, if the player is still on warranty I suggest you get it replaced where you bought it, if possible show the store where you bought the problem that is happening.

  37. I have an NWZ-E443 that seems to be stuck in a loop. It won't go to the home page, its stuck on the start up page (saying 'Every Moment has its music'. I wanted to start it in test mode, as I believe that the charge level of the battery dropped to low, and the trickle charge circuit doesn't add enough power to overcome the software loop. Any ideas on how or what to do ?

  38. My NWZ-E443 seems to be stuck at the start up screen. It dosen't fire up the home screen, instead just stays at the screen displaying 'Every moment has its music'. The product was left for a few weeks without charging, which I believe resulted in the trickle charge circuit being activated, and now the circuit dosen't have enough power to pass this software bug. Any idaes on what I can do ??

  45. I am not sure of any ways to access the service menu in the touchscreen A860, I am sure there is though.

I also tested the pattern on the new E series at a store and it would not enter the service menu for me unfortunately.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Hi Ascariss - thanks for the fix. I have a e453R and after a bit of fiddling around it is now off the scale in terms of loudness. I did the maxout and BGAIN and TGAIN adjustments. Radio shafted though. If selected from main menu thing just freezes. Any ideas how you can get the radio back? Only use it on Saturdays for local sport commentaries - no great loss but nice to have. I put a pin in the reset at the back - no change. THanks if you can help. Dave

  48. I AM NEVER GOING TO BUY A SONY MP3 PLAYER ANY MORE.
I JUST WASTED 70 EUROS ON SOMETHING I HAVE A HARD TIME HEARING WHEN IN THE SUBWAY OR WALKING IN A BUSY STREET.
    IT SUCKS!!!
I CANNOT BELIEVE SONY IS UNDERMINING ITS OWN PLAYERS WITH THIS STUPID VOLUME LIMIT.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Agreed, but I believe Sony received an EU directive forcing them to restrict the volume over long periods (20 hours for my NWZ-A15.) I can live with this, but it spoils my listening and I will not buy another player for the EU market in case a similar thing happens.
The point is, that no-one can tell how loud your headphones are, and if they are quiet, like my KOMCs, they are not harming my hearing. Customers need to be told ONCE, not every 20 hours; it then becomes our responsibility.

  69. Hi, i have the service manual for the NWZ-E463/E463HK/E463K/E464/E464K/E465

This has worked on my E464 (tested last night), even though i didn't need to remove a volume cap i used it to change the bass/treble gains, everything works fine with the player, the radio, sync to a pc/ps3/laptop, all player options and functions are working fine. To access the service menu use the follwing steps.

    1. Make sure you are on the main menu.
    2. Put the player on Hold
    3. Press the following keys in order:

    [LEFT] -> [VOL-] -> [VOL+] -> [RIGHT] -> [BACK] -> [PLAY/PAUSE] -> [RIGHT] -> [PLAY/PAUSE] -> [BACK]-> [LEFT]

    4. If done right the machine will turn off and back on and load a colour bar, press any button to get off the colour bar and into the service menu.

Hope this helps some of you. Dave

  73. I live in Holland/Netherlands (Europe),
and i am gonna order me a mp3 player from amazone,
with the intention that its gonna be one without that cursed volume limit.

But maybe it still has a volume limit once they find out they gonna have to ship it to Holland?

Im assuming there wont be any volume limit to deal with,
but IF I had to deal with a volume limit,
then wich mp3 player would you guys reccomend to me?One wich has an service menu i can acces and where i can shut the volume limit off.

I was thinking of buying the 'Sony Walkman NWZ-E354BLK'.
Is there a service menu for it wich can shut the volume limit off?
There is a newer model also, but i dont trust it.

My gut feeling says that IF I had to deal with shutting out the volume limit,i better go for the old one.

Are you guys from the UK or from the States?
Becuase I thought there isnt any volume limit in the States, just in Europe.

Hopefully Amazone is a US website, cuase if its from the UK then im screwed.

    1. You don't break the law if you post here how to access the service mode on the 860 series. Only people who do something wrong can break the player, but that is everyone's decision, if willing to take the risk or not. I am also owning an A866 and would like to know how to get into the service mode.
I'd like to know if there is a way to change the long standby time (24 hours) of the player to less, e.g. 2h. Would save much battery.

      So please post it.

  99. Hello,

I own a Sony Walkman NWZ-E463. When I plug it into my computer that has Windows 7 Premium installed on it (via the provided USB cord), a little error window pops up from the task bar stating: "USB Device Not Recognized", then under that it says: "One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it. For assistance in solving this problem, click this message." Anyway, I have tried countless methods that I've found on the Internet to correct this issue, including: Uninstalling and re-installing the driver, then restarting the computer; doing both a soft reset and a hard reset on the device and re-plugging it into the computer; FORMATTING the device and re-plugging the device to the computer; plugging it into the computer using a different USB cord; plugging it into two different computers (a computer with Linux installed on it, and one with Windows Vista installed on it)...None of these even temporarily solved the issue! One more detail: When I do plug it into the computer, it actually does charge, but I am not able to browse files from within the device. It does not show up as a portable device in the Device Manager. I'm at the end of my rope here...I need to be able to use my Walkman because I am teaching my first dance class this Saturday, and the Walkman is my only source of music! I need answers, please and thank you! :)

    1. Most MP3 players including the ipods(r) are around 40mW-55mW's headphone output, while hooked to a 32 ohm earphone. Now why did I put the earphone impedance in there? To understand the power handling, you also need a small understanding of impedance (ohms).
Impedance is resistance, like water through a pipe, this is power through a wire. Lower impedance drivers simply draw more power from audio devices. all audio devices have limits to how low or high you can go with impedance, mp3 players earphones range between 64-16 ohms with a few exceptions. The difference in ohms can make a large difference in power for example, if the 64ohm earphone took 30mWs, the 32ohm earphone would draw around 50mW and a 16ohm earphone would draw around 80mWs.
In the home and car audio amps work similar, for example by going from a 8 ohm driver to a 4 ohm driver would double the amps power output or at least pull up to the amps capacitor capacity. However, Mp3 players are actually a flat power like most headphone jacks and have no amplifier. This make our volume control more like a impedance control and we are simply extended the peak volume and start farther up the band. A lower impedance unit does not have more distortion or a lacking F/R, the only real drawback for mp3 players would be a shorter battery life.

Recommend power handling and impedance for mp3 player earphones
      32 ohm earphone - 100mW peak / 50mW rated
      16 ohm Earphone - 200mW peak / 100mW rated
These power handling recommendations are based on earphones with a sensitivity rating of 104dB and higher, going a little less if fine. If the earphones your going with have a lower sensitivity rating you would want the power handling to be less. Higher then these numbers and you might not be hitting the earphones continuous power handling.

    3. Most headphones used with portable electronics are low-impedance, around 32 ohms. This is because the power supplied by the device is limited due to it being battery powered, and the low impedance in the headphones allows higher volume levels.

try so buy 16 ohm impedance earphones or made it even 8 or 6 ohm by change mini-jack 3.5mm in electronic service

  105. Hey, got a E463 and suddenly nothing works anymore.
First of all, it is damn hard to connect it to a pc, because the connection breaks somehow. I've tried all Sony recommended, but it didn't help.
Then it got terrible yesterday: From one second to another the hole player was no longer to be controlled.
I just wanted to get the volume down, but - and I repeated it a few times - the volume got to its maximum. All possible resets didn't help. Sony now doesn't offer any help for the E463.
What should I do, besides getting a new one which certainly won't be a Sony then?

Anyway, mine has the usual problems of the series, such as loose keys. I acutally started to hate my favourite toy.

  106. Hey, I got the E463 and I have various problems with it, all came out of a sudden.

First of all, it is damn hard to connect it to any pc, the connection suddenly breaks, if there is one at all. I just can halfly connect it to my netbook (Windows 8.1) and no more to my other pc (Windows Vista). I tried all Sony recommended and nothing helped. Well, it has a few other ugly habits, it can't be swiched off via PWR OFF, just over PLAY/PAUSE and HOLD. HOLD and PLAY are pretty loose.
But that is not the worst thing to me:
Yesterday there were various new problems!
I just wanted to low down volume, but it got to the maximum of 30. I tried it a few times and it always happened. Even with the "arrows" and Back and Option the volume went up. All possible resets didn't help. The player can't be controlled anymore. Sony doesn't offer me support for problems anymore. The page with the tips is completly white except the question:"Did it help you?"
Has someone an idea besides buying a new one (which definitvely won't be a Walkman)?

    1. If the device is still under warranty I would claim it but if there is no more warranty then there is not much you can do.

Reset seems not to be working so one final option is letting the power drain and then recharging it, but doubt that will change much.

One final option is clear all songs off the device using your computer to see if that changes anything?

I've never heard of the walkmans having such issues, perhaps your device became faulty? or some moisture got inside the device?

  131. WTF with Sony ditching the Clear Bass function on the new 2016 models (i.e. A35 + WM-1A + WM-1Z) what a shame. for my money the Clear Bass option is what set Sony above all the other competition out there and is not only warm, clear and distortion free at even the highest volumes but really brings out the best in quality cans like Grado which don't in and of themselves have a lot of bass/sub bass , yet with a touch of eq and clear bass can absolutely thump and yet still retain clarity, detail, instrument separation and superior dynamic range.ah well ,guess i'll be looking to replace the battery in my older Sony Walkmans when they go because no Clear Bass - no sale.

    ReplyDelete
  132. The clear bass function is not available in the USA version of the WM1Z either.
But you can use the EQ feature to enhance bass.

  136. I have returned my CE labeled EU version NW-WM1Z because of the volume cap on it. The volume level with MDR-Z1R at a max volume set at 120 was so low that I could hear voices outside the cans. No adjustment chance, because you have to listen at the volume set to max. Thinking to buy US version. Any comment will be appreciated about the gain settings on the US version also.

    2. IMPORTANT: You will need to reset the settings after the change to get the modification applied .
you can use E1 or E2 code. i have A865 like you. indeed there is no such a huge difference in sound volume that i've been expected for, but i've noticed it very well. or try to listen carefully in some IEM's before and after using this tool. do not forget to reset player every time you do changes.

    3. Thank you for your reply.
I did reset it, the matter is that i expected a bigger difference. After listening carefully, i noticed it is, indeed, a bit louder, only not as much as i expected. Well, much better than nothing!

    1. Thanks, Richard! Worked for me on my E585.

However, I can't manage to do what I want to do, which is disable the radio.

I know, sounds weird, but I live in Switzerland and here we have to pay for a radio licence, and I don't want to because I never listen to the radio. If an inspector comes visiting, I want to be able to show him/her that the radio is disabled on my Walkman.

I can see volume options under FM, but when I reduce it to 0 and exit test mode I can still hear the radio. When I re-enter test mode, the volume for FM is back up to 30. So maybe I am not saving it correctly. Any ideas?
