Sony M-Series Preview (NWZ-M504)

Good news everyone, my M-Series has arrived.  Due to the fact I was not home earlier in the day, my delivery only arrived about an hour or so ago, therefore apologies for the poor photos; I will upload better photos tomorrow.

A quick overview so far.  The device is heavier than I expected but it does have a bigger battery and S-Master MX amp.  The included headphones are the MDR-NC31E, which are identical to the headphones which shipped with my MDR-NWBT20N, except the cable is longer.  Built quality is solid, it is plastic, but the heavier weight makes it feel as if the body is metal.  Controls are simple, play/pause/call key near screen.  On one side, hold switch, vol +/-, home/back and reset button, nothing on the other side.  On the underside is the NFC antenna and on the opposite side of the 3.5mm jack is the micro-USB port, covered by a flap.

The menu is very simple to use and easy to navigate.  The M-Series does come with a clip which you can attach on the underside, but only in one direction which is a shame.  The device is able to receive a bluetooth signal but is unable to send one out, to for example larger headphones or a wireless speaker.

That is all for now, I will update this post tomorrow after I use the M-Series for the day but if anyone has any questions, please post them up as comments or email me, and I will do my best to reply and answer them.

    1. Hi there, I tried translating your question using google.

I have an equalizer on my xperia z1 activated and it seems to work just fine with the M series, turning off the equalizer on the Z1 does change the sound on the M series. I did notice the equalizer on the M series does not change the sound when attached to the Z1, so I believe the built in equalizer only works when you are using the actual MP3 function on the M series and not when using the M as a bluetooth headset. I hope this helps and answers your question. Stay tuned, I will be also buying the new A series next week so will have that to test as well. :)

    1. I don't think so, I have not seen any guide or tutorial for such an update, but perhaps a method does exist, but I am not that tech savvy to be able to try it out.

  3. Any comment on the sound quality? I'm currently using a Sony SBH-50 bluetooth set to connect ot my Z3 to listen to FLAC files. The specs for this look pretty nice with the noise canceling/apt-x. Can you comment on the battery life and weight as well? Would this be something suitable for the gym? Thanks!

  4. Hi,
Does this device support AptX Bluetooth streaming? I have a Sony Z2 Tablet that has AptX and I would like something to pair with it.

    1. Yes it does, I use aptX on the M series and my Z1. In the menu of the M, you will have to find the settings then bluetooth settings >> wireless play quality and finally select prioritize sound quality.

    1. It is coming, I just have been busy lately, I have lots of things to post once I have free time to write up the reviews in full, M series, new A series, WH series and XBA-A3 headphones. So hopefully within 2 weeks in early march. :)

  6. Don't waste your time/money if you were expecting it to pair with and play back through a set of bluetooth headphones. It won't.

    1. Yup, I mentioned this in the preview "The device is able to receive a bluetooth signal but is unable to send one out, to for example larger headphones or a wireless speaker." It is a shame Sony did not add this capability.

    1. I'll say this, it is a great little mp3 player, the sound quality is quite good for something this small, I love the built in noise cancellation but the headphones don't provide the best sound quality and using other non NC headphones will render the NC useless. Battery life is above average, controls are easy and can be operated blindly in a pocket. The clip is sturdy but not super strong. OLED screen is nice but maybe a tad on the small side. Using it as a remote for a phone or mp3 player also works like a charm and adds NC but again using the provided headphones. The only issue is the 8GB capacity here in Europe, should have been a 16GB model or at least come with expandable storage like the new A but doubt Sony will update this.
