Sony adds support for Hi-Res streaming on NW-A100 and NW-ZX500 Walkmans

Sony NW-A100 and NW-ZX500

Sony has released a new firmware update for the NW-A100 and NW-ZX500, version 2.00.05. The new
update finally brings support for Hi-Res streaming which was missing initially. I am trying to find where I wrote about the missing H-Res streaming but cannot find it, but will update the post once I do.

Other changes include the following:

  • Provides Security Updates (The security patch level of the Settings menu will be as of April 2020)
  • Adds a Bookmarks function to the Music Player app
  • Adds a Keyword Search function to the Music Player app
  • Fixes an issue where the playback speed becomes slow on certain M4A format content
  • Improves general functions

The changes are definitely welcome and it shows Sony can keep improving the new Walkmans with feature and changes, hopefully battery life improvements will also be some of those changes.

To update your player, your will need Music Center for PC, which if you ask me is ridiculous that you need software to update a Walkman with WiFi and Android.

Anyways, please do post any issues or problems in the comments below. I will not be posting firmware updates for headphones on the blog anymore, since it is not point, instead they will be posted on my twitter. Unless people want me to post firmware updates for headphones here, if so please leave a comment below.

Unfortunately Sony has not added any DAC function for the new Walkmans, so hopefully this can be fixed in the future with an update as well.

  1. You don't have to use the software. You can update over wifi in the Android system settings

  2. You mean you can't use walkmans as a dac/amp? Dang, Sony needs to make a iFi Zen DAC competitor since they made the 4.4mm standard and their affordable portable devices can't be used in desktop mode

    1. Not the new Android powered models for the time being. The older Walkmans, the A50, A40, and ZX300 for example can be used as DACs.

  3. Hi-Res streaming does it mean 24bit 192khz or just 96khz?

    1. I believe it depends on what the service is streaming it at, not all are the same I believe.

    1. Interesting, wonder if this was on purpose or a side effect of the firmware.
