Firmware Update to version 4.02.00 for NW-ZX500/NW-A100 series

Sony NW-ZX50/ NW-A100

Another month and another firmware update, this time only security updates which brings the security level to March 2021. This updates does also include all the past changes and updates below:

  • Adds support for the 360 Reality Audio service
  • Adds support for DSEE Ultimate(when using Music player) NOTE: When DSEE Ultimate is active, the battery life may become shorter than in the case of DSEE HX.
  • Enables sound adjustment during Bluetooth output
  • Adds support for Hi-Res streaming
  • Adds a Bookmarks function to the Music Player app
  • Adds a Keyword Search function to the Music Player app
  • Fixes an issue where the playback speed becomes slow on certain M4A format content
  • Adds an Auto Power Off function to help prolong battery life
  • Fixes an issue where a message falsely stating the SD card is damage is occasionally displayed immediately after inserting the card
  • Improves general performance
  • Improves the connection stability with the Music Center for PC software
  • Provides Security Updates
  • Fixes an issue where black dots and lines appear on the Home screen
  • Fixes an issue where images of the quick setting panel were not correctly displayed
  • Fixes an issue where the Wi-Fi does not turn on from time to time
  • Improves general functions

Unfortunately no function or battery improvements this time around, which sucks. The battery life is not horrible on the ZX500 but the older NW-ZX2 was also on Android (4.2) and had superior battery life even with a larger (4in) screen. Yes the ZX2 has a larger battery (1860mAh) versus the ZX500 (1500mAh) but I suspect the newer ZX500 has more power hungry components inside or the newest version of Android is more power hungry compared to the older 4.2 version.

I am curious what type of battery life numbers users are getting on their A and ZX Walkmans. Please post your numbers in the comments below with what settings were used.

Thanks to Gary for sending this in on twitter.

  1. I've been using the A100 for over a year now, I get around 11-15 hours use on average. I tend to use flac (varying) and mp3 (320). I try to minimize the screen on time as much as possible and lower the brightness as much as I can. If I listen to more flac versus mp3, I am closer to 10-11 hours.

  2. Battery life for my A105 is approx 10 hrs on a mixture of streaming MP3 and playing CD quality flac in the music app. Worst battery life I've ever had on a music player.
