Sony YY2951 and YY2952 (WF-C500) Leaked

Sony WF-C500 (YY2952)

First off, many thanks to aborne25 from twitter for providing the photos and information and second, it looks like these will be low to mid-level devices with both being manufactured in Vietnam.

WF-C500

Looking at the YY2952 (WF-C500) first, we can see that it will be offered in 4 different colours, black, green, white and orange. The design is similar to the new WF-1000XM4, more rounded with bulge at the side, but flatter overall. I do not see any button which is used to operate the voice assistant, so either no voice assistant will be available on the headset, or the voice assistant is operated by a touch panel on the flat exterior surface.

The ear tips look to be identical to the ones from the WF-XB700, these are the hybrid silicone rubber variety. I do not think the WF-C500 replaces the WF-XB700, and is positioned under the WF-XB700 at and even more affordable price. In the first post, the Bluetooth certification provided some information about what Bluetooth chip, either the Airoha AB153x or AB156x, my bet is is on either the AB1532 or AB1536, but we will know once we teardown appears online.

Only thing we can see in both these sets of photos is the hole for the voice microphone. The manual does mention water resistance but does not provide the level of protection. The precautions do match the same ones from the WF-XB700, so we are most likely looking at an IPX4 rating. There is no NFC, and the charging case uses USB type-C.

The charging case looks similar in design to the WF-XB700, I would not be surprised if Sony used the same parts from the WF-XB700 in the WF-C500, like the battery and even perhaps the PCB as well. The other piece of information from the case is the charge rating, 100mA, identical to the WF-XB700.

YY2951

I first wrote about the YY2951 back in early June, all we knew back then was it was a NC headset with the MT2822S Bluetooth chip. But now with this leak, we have photos and full specifications but unfortunately no model name yet. I suspect this is the WH-CH720N, but of course there is a chance this is something else since the logo is on the headband like on the WH-XB900N, WH-XB700 and WH-H910N. The WH-XB700 is/was made in Vietnam, the WH-XB900N in China and the WHH910N in Malaysia. But would Sony move production of a premium device from Malaysia to Vietnam? What about moving production out of China? Who knows.

The design is all new, which is always welcome, I hope the shinny plastic is only for the pre-production model and not something present on the retail device. Such shinny plastic would show scratches quite easily.

The colour looks like it is black but it could easily be a dark blue, but there is no mention of colours in the leak. The WH-CH710N for example came in black, white and blue. The internal battery is 3.85V/3.0~4.4V, or 500mA, there is USB type-C for charging, but only version 2.0. The Bluetooth chip is confirmed as the Mediatek MT2822S, with Bluetooth 5.2 support.

Some interesting information is that the Internal DSP frequency is 416MHz, the Host Processor is 208Mhz and the touch sensor is 16Mhz. So with a touch sensor, we know that a touch panel for controls will be present on this device. And now for the rest of the photos from the leak.

Not much else in the leak. I suspect we will see both headsets soon, perhaps in August or early September but that could always change. Once again thanks to aborne25 from twitter for providing such a great leak.

  1. for budget in ear wireless headphones, the wf-c500 look pretty good and if priced competitively should sell well. As for the large headphones, I don't think they are the 710N replacement, but we wait.
