Sony YY2974 appears on the FCC, a small USB Receiver with LE Audio? (Update 2)

Sony YY2974 LE Audio

While, this is not a wireless headset, it might be quite important for Sony's wireless headsets. We are looking at another USB transceiver from Sony, like the YY2965 that ships with the Inzone headsets. The major difference appears to be size, with the YY2965 being much longer.

I suspect we might be looking at a small USB receiver with LE Audio support for computers without LE Audio. The date when the FCC documents become available is January 8th, 2023, while this date does line up with CES 2023, it could just be coincidence. But Sony could still unveil it there, or earlier for the holiday season. LE Audio products are slated to arrive in Q4/Holidays, so this does line up.

The FCC documents only show Bluetooth Low Energy testing, and I do not see any regular classic Bluetooth testing, so this is why I think we might be looking at an LE Audio device.

Sony did test the USB transceiver with an unspecified set of Sony earbuds, so it could be any of the newer devices, LinkBuds, LinkBuds S, or even the WF-1000XM4. Of course it could also be a new model, since there is no FCC ID provided, but then the other devices also lack any FCC IDs.

Finally, the model/code is pretty high up there in Sony's number system. The only other high number codes is the YY2965, USB transceiver for the Inzone headsets, and the new mysterious YY2969, which might end up being the LinkBuds with LE Audio support.

So if this ends up being a small USB dongle with LE Audio, perhaps more of Sony's earbuds will get an update to LE audio, like the WF-1000XM4 and perhaps even the WF-C500.

Update:

Well it looks like I was spot on, we are looking at an USB dongle with LE audio support. The device hit Bluetooth SIG and some of the details were revealed.

The Bluetooth chip looks to be either the MT2822 or MT2833 or the Airoha equivalent. The combined design, 182912, leads to the following devices. Do notice that the Airoha/Mediatek chips were certified on 5.3 and not 5.2 like the dongle, which means any device from Sony using the MT2822 can technically be updated to 5.3.

Perhaps we will soon see this dongle released by Sony. I suspect this will come out around the same time as the LE audio firmware updates for Sony's headsets.

Update 2:

This is the USB transceiver for the LinkBuds UC for Microsoft teams. See link here. The LinkBuds UC use the code YY2969.

Anyways, what are people's thoughts? Leave them in the comments.

  1. I expect that these are for the new Walkman. They don't have an Bluetooth Receiver Mode and i assume that you'll put them in USB DAC Mode and plug this small dongle into them.

    1. that does make sense and would add LE audio to them without the need to certify the walkmans again
