Sony YY2982 - New Budget Sony Earbuds? (Update 4)

Sony YY2982 wireless earbuds

A new Sony wireless headset has appeared on the FCC (thanks E_D___B_A_N_G_E_R). We are looking at a new pair of Sony wireless earbuds. Could this be an successor to the WF-700N? Possible, but there is no noise cancellation in the product description, just "Wireless Stereo Headset". So will this slot under the WF-C700N?

Not many details from the filing, but it will have a FPC (flexible printed circuit) antenna like all other earbud models, so nothing new here. The label drawing has the standard photo Sony uses for their earbuds, so nothing is revealed. Edit, the FCC short term confidentiality end date is September 25th, 2024, so we are looking at a Fall 2024 release.

Funny (or strange) enough, the block diagram is available for viewing and this is NEVER available for any Sony product. No doubt it will be removed once I post this. :P (Edit, and the block diagram has been removed from the FCC link, but still available if you know where to look)

The block diagram reveals a couple of details:

  • The bluetooth chip - Airoha AB1563E
  • Earbud battery - 70mAh 3.85V (same as WF-C700N)
  • Charging case battery - 300 mAh 3.85V (same as WF-C700N)
  • USB type-C port on charging case
  • Earbuds will only have 2 charging pins
  • Case will had a LED and there will be a pairing button on the back

There is a microphone coming off the Bluetooth chip, it is labelled as "FF&Talk", which is obviously for voice but the FF could stand for "Feed Forward", which is for noise cancellation. But the headset is not labelled as a noise cancelling headset. So perhaps I could be wrong, or the mic just cancels noise during calls. Who knows.

Edit: the block diagram also has a chip beside the main SoC, the MFI343S00176, which is an Apple MFI communication codec chip. This chip is necessary for the headset to support Apple's MFi system, which is used in the iPhone, iPad and iPod.

Apart from that, there is also a physical button that will control the earbuds, like the WF-C500 and WF-C700N.

Will be interesting to see where this headset fits in the lineup. Will update the post if I receive any additional information.

Update - June 26

The headset has passed through import custom checks into India, which has revealed the colour options for these new budget earbuds. There will be 4 colours, black (B), white (W), yellow (Y), and blue (L). I am going off previous Sony colour codes, so perhaps Y and L could be different colours. The colour availability might vary from region to region once these are released.

Still trying to ID the model name, but it was not revealed in this import filing. So I will keep digging for more information. If anyone knows the new model name, you can message me on twitter or use the contact page to get more info on how to contact me.

Update - May 29

The YY2982 has appeared on Bluetooth SIG. There is support for Isochronous Adaptation Layer, which is required for LE Audio, so there is a good chance this will support LE Audio, either out of the box or with a firmware update. That being said, other Sony headsets also have Isochronous Adaptation Layer support but no LE Audio support. Bluetooth version is 5.3. For comparison, the WF-C700N is 5.2 and the WF-C500 is 5.0.

If anyone has anymore information about this model, please contact me. Thanks ED for the heads up.

I will add this in this update. The headset also appeared on Korea's RRA in the beginning of May. The certification reveals that the headset is made in China.
