Sony Xperia will use the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5
Qualcomm is hosting their Snapdragon Summit 2025 event this week, and today they announced their new premium SoC, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5. The major news for Xperia fans is not the chip itself, but what Qualcomm mentioned in their press release.
The press announcement for the chip mentions that the new SD 8 Elite Gen 5 will be featured in a Sony Xperia flagship device. The natural assumption is that this flagship is next year's Xperia 1 VIII. This is great news, but will the device me offered in all regions where the 1 VII is sold? Or will Sony leave some markets next year? Hopefully the former.
Qualcomm's announcement ties in well with the leaked new model numbers we got last week from a Carrier's compatibility list for eSIM list.
Some may argue that it is too early for a new model, but recall that Gizmochina posted 3 codes last year in early September. Although they did make an error, assuming the 3 codes (PM-1502-BV, PM-1503-BV, PM-1504-BV) were 3 different smartphone models, rather than 1 model with 3 variants.
The leak only has revealed 2 variants, but there has to be more, as in Japan, there needs to be 3 different versions for the 3 different carriers. Docomo, AU, and Softbank. For example the current 1 VII variants:
- SO-51F - Docomo
- A501SO - Softbank
- SOG15 - AU (KDDI)
So even if the 2 leaked codes are for Japan carrier models, 1 model is still missing. The remaining variants of the 1 VII are:
- XQ-FS44 - Sim-free Japanese model
- XQ-FS54 - European model
- XQ-FS72 - Asian/global model
Unfortunately the PM codes do not always match up with the carrier/region. I have compiled the data for EU/UK, Asia, and Japan Sim-free models to see if there is any pattern. My data is from this site, and wikipedia. So hopefully my table is correct, otherwise I can update it if anyone finds any errors.
As the table shows, the EU/UK version generally has 0 at the end of its PM code, except in the 1 V generation. The Sim-free Japanese model did seem to stick to 6 for a while, but changed again with the latest VII model. Finally, the Asian model is all over the place, sometimes ending in 1, 2 or and even 0.
We only have PM-1522-BV and PM-1523-BV. Perhaps PM-1522-BV is the Asian model, with PM-1523-BV being the Docomo model, but in one generation, AU used 3 in its PM code, so guaranteed.
The new Xperia 1 VIII XQ code should use G for the starting letter, but there is no way to determine the second letter, as there appears to be no pattern based off the previous models.
- II - AT
- III - BC
- IV - CT
- V - DQ
- VI - EC
- VII - FS
But the Docomo version does seem to have a pattern, so the new model should be SO-51G. For AU, looking at the models and pattern, the 1 VIII should be SOG17. Softbank could be A601SO, if they keep the same pattern as with the previous models.
As for any possible specifications, that will be in a future post. As always if anyone has any details about the upcoming Xperia 1 VIII, please contact me. I will not be posting every little rumour, as that would be counterproductive.
