Sony NW-A300 and NW-ZX700 Walkmans to Receive Android 13 Upgrade?
The previous NW-A100 and NW-ZX500 Walkmans never received any Android updates, only security patches. Whether this was related to the SoC is unknown, but this is my suspicion. The new models are on Qualcomm SoCs which should have better Android support.
Now thanks to Ed, we know that Sony is testing Android 13 on the new A and ZX Walkmans. We have Geekbench results which shows the A100 and ZX700 with Android 13.
The first NW-A300 Geekbench result with Android 13 is from early July.
There are further results, with the latest benchmark from September 14th. So Sony is testing the update still. Hopefully we will have a full release soon.
Same story for the NW-ZX700, first benchmark results in July, with further benchmarks until September 12th.
The scores are similar between Android 12 and 13, but there are some differences between 12 and 13, which you read up here.
So if you own a new A300 or ZX700, Android 13 is in your future, when I do not know.

Maybe Sony wants to upgrade these devices to Android 13 in order to support (the gimmicky) spatial sound and head tracking features in their (WH and WF) XM5?

ReplyDeleteI've seen a few more benchmarks but nothing else. It could drop anytime if it has been testing for so long. There is always a chance that Sony doesn't do an update and the testing was just testing.
DeleteSony has never updated Android on any of their previous walkman models. How likey do you think they will this time?
ReplyDeleteThe fact there are models being tested with android 13 is a positive sign but it has been a while since a test has appeared on any benchmark sites. In fact they stopped shortly after I made this post.
