Sony YY2981 passes through Bluetooth Certification

Sony YY2981 WHXB920N WH-XB920N

I wrote about the YY2981 back in October 2023 when it appeared on the FCC. Now the headset has finally appeared on Bluetooth SIG, where it is described as "Wireless Stereo headset". We do know it will come with Noise Cancellation as this is how it was described in the FCC filing. so this is probably an error.

Some details from the filing:

  • Bluetooth version is 5.2
  • The headset is LE Audio certified, as Isochronous Adaptation Layer is supported
  • The Bluetooth chip is identified as being the same one used in the LinkBuds S, Inzone H5 and Inzone Buds, meaning we are looking at the Mediatek MT2822

What we do not know, is whether the headset will support LE Audio out of the box or receive a firmware update that will add it later on. I suspect the former.

In addition, the headset has appeared on a number of import documents late last year. The descriptions are a bit off but what I can gather is that we will have 2 colours, black and white. Previously we only had black and blue with the WH-XB910N. Funny enough, it is also described as Wireless Headset without the Noise Cancellation description. Btw, the import/export filling results usually appear much later than the dates of their actual import/export.

A few sites are quoting a post from 91mobiles, with "supposed renders" of the headset. In fact the photos are wrong and the photos are of the WH-CH720N, which they claimed last year was the WH-XB920N. They never responded to my replies in their tweets.

Even the SoundGuys reposted the photos from 91mobiles, which is puzzling as they have a review of the WH-CH720N on their site, so either they tested the WH-CH720N, or they did not. I sometimes wonder if these bloggers/reviewers even analyze the content they repost.

I suspect we are inching closer to the reveal date, perhaps early to late March? Finally, we still have no news about the WH-1000XM6, so either it will be released later on in the year and the WH-1000XM5 still have some life left in them according to Sony. Wonder when that LE Audio update will drop?

As always, if anyone has any release information or specifications, you can email me via the contact page.
