Huge Sony WF-1000XM4 leak (update 2)

Sony WF-1000XM4

They say, when it rains, it pours. Huge leak again of the upcoming WF-1000XM4, thanks to mirai160525 from twitter. Make sure to give them a follow and like on twitter. No specifications yet, but I have a feeling those will leak soon as well.

Rest of the photos. Click on the photos for larger size.

Update 2:

Some more information and photos courtesy of winfuture.de. They are reporting that the new headphones will feature a new Sony V1 processor to replace the current QN1e and is said to be superior in performance as well. Battery life is rated at 8 hours with Noise cancellation on and 12 hours with it off. The charging case will provide 2 more charges for a total of 24, and 36 hours respectively. The earbuds are IPX4 rated, which is identical to the WF-XB700, so good enough for use at the gym or during outdoor exercise, but I would be careful in rain, as some WF-XB700 users have had issues with their headphones after rain. From the photos, it looks like the little golden element is actually the microphone and not for NC as it is directed towards the mouth. Qi wireless charging is supported. Pricing should be the same around 279 euros, but this price will vary due to different taxes. A press release should be coming soon.

Update:

I will attempt to compare the charging case size of the WF-1000XM4 to the WF-1000XM3. The WF-1000XM3 reference size is 78mm in length, and using the USB type-C port width of 8.34mm, I get a WF-1000XM4 length of 60.4mm, I will round this down to 60mm.

I tried scaling the photos below, not sure how accurate it is, but the WF-1000XM4 length is 76.9% of the WF-1000XM3, which corresponds to 60mm/78mm.

These photos are not 100% accurate, but they should give a good indication about the size difference which is pretty significant if you ask me.

Again thanks to mirai160525 on twitter. Check out their twitter for some great comparison photos to the WF-1000XM3.

So what do people think? Case does look quite compact, wonder if the battery was reduced in size or everything is just packaged much better.

One quick side note, I find it odd Sony has not contacted me regarding these. They contacted me rather quick;y back when I posted the WH-1000XM3 photos a week before their debut and this is possibly an entire month before debut. Is there a chance both the press photo leak and the certification photos are Sony's own doing? Hmm.

    Great job Sony.

  4. The case could get drastically smaller than XM3's. What about battery life? Some say that smaller case could mean shorter battery life.

    1. See the top of the post, I posted a size comparison, should be to scale.

There was quite a lot of dead space in the wf-1000xm3, so I suspect sony minimized the empty space as much as possible in the new model to make it as compact as possible. Sony used a regular 14500 sized battery in the XM3, but both the WF-H800 and WF-XB700 use sheet type batteries, 621733 type. I suspect sony will go for a similar battery type which should be smaller than the 14500 version.

Battery life is still rated at 6hr + 18hr, identical to the XM3, so if the battery was reduced then the battery efficiency of the earbuds had to improve in order to have identical run time.

From what I know the new bluetooth chip, MT2822S is on a newer manufacturing process, so it should be more battery efficient.

    1. I was told there was mention of an IPX rating in the manual, but I was not able to confirm it with other people.

  6. Looking hella dope. No info on supported codecs?

    1. probably looking at 3 for the moment, AAC, SBC and LDAC. If sony decides to certify these later for the new LC3 codec, then we would be at 4.

  8. I really dig the all round smaller form factor, the case looks so dinky compared to the previous version. Everything points to improvements all around. Honestly, I’d be happy if they sounded the same as the xm3, with the changes they’ve made but if there’s a sonic improvement too, well that’d be the cherry on top!

    1. Supposedly they will feature a larger driver, from a comment that someone posted on the blog, so hopefully is true.

    2. Yes I hope they’ve been snake to miniaturise all the parts and circuitry making room for a slightly larger driver.

  9. Any news about their IP rating?

  10. I don't know if I should save up for the wf-1000xm4 or just go some below 100usd anc buds like the fiil T1 pro/one more comfobuds pro. Any opinions? (cause if I do go for the xm4 then I need to save up first)

  11. Am hoping these can connect to 2 devices at once ie Phone and Walkman same as their big brother WH1000XM4's.

  12. Some on reddit is claiming that on visiting a store in Japan they saw a sign which said that these would be in stock on July 13th

  13. Doesn't look like it will be feasible to replace the battery, which is a big downside for me. Surely Sony has the design chops to make that possible

    1. Same situation on the current WF-1000XM3 model. But technically the battery is replaceable on the WF-1000XM3, you just need to take the device apart and replace it with a new CP1254 size battery.

Once the WF-1000M4 are released and a teardown occurs, we will know if such a similar replacement will be possible.
