Sony YY2959 Appears on Bluetooth SIG (Update WH-G900N)

Sony YY2959

Another Sony headset has appeared on Bluetooth SIG, the YY2959. So what could this be? At this moment I have no idea, but it seems to only support up to Bluetooth 5.0, which could indicate a lower end model. But more on that later.

Update:

The model name has been identified, WH-G900N. Could this also be a gaming headset to complement the YY2961? At this moment, no idea but that could be what the G stands for, Gaming. If it is not a gaming headset, then at least we know it will come with noise cancellation. This import certification shows the model number and something called "head capture". Anyone know what this "head capture" could be?

Diving deeper, we can look at the combined designs, 124814 and 123736, for some more information.

If the details in the listing seem a bit familiar, that is because they are identical to the WF-1000XM3 one. The same combined designs are used, 124814 and 123736. The 124814 listing shows the various versions, the MT2811A, MT2811B, and MT2811S. The MT2811S appeared in the WF-1000XM3 and WF-H800 teardowns, with the MT2811A found in the WH-1000XM4. No idea if Sony used the MT2811B.

I am not sure if the MT model numbers correspond directly to the AB naming, but I have on good authority that the MT2811 and AB1552 have almost identical die areas with the various models just being variant of the AB155X platform, see below.

So why would Sony reuse the old MT2811/AB155x Bluetooth chipset for a new headset in 2022 when they have the new MT2822/AB1568 and the AB1562M at their disposal? Perhaps the current chip shortage is one reason with Sony having some leftover MT2811 chips and decided to use them in a lower end model?

There is also one more possible idea. Could this be a re-certification of the WF-1000XM3 for LE Audio adoption? My guess is no. The supported layers are also different between the WF-1000XM3 and the YY2959. The WF-1000XM3 has these extra layers:

  • Attribute Protocol
  • Device ID
  • Generic Attribute Profile
  • Low Energy Link Layer
  • Low Energy RF PHY

I compared the WF-1000XM3 and WF-C500, and they have the same identical supported layers. But perhaps these layers will appear later on once the retail version of the YY2959 is released and the Bluetooth Certification updated.

So until these appear on the FCC, we have no idea what we are looking at, could be a WF model, could be a WH model, might even be a WI model. Post your ideas below for what this could be.
