Sony YY2986 - New Wireless Noise Cancelling Headset Appears (Update 3)
News is slow, but we have another new wireless headset code from Sony, the YY2986. A new model just appeared on an Indonesian certification site. Unlike the previous new model, YY2984, we have some additional information with this certification. We know the headset will feature noise cancellation and that is made in Vietnam.
Therefore we could be looking at a mid range device, like a new WF-C710N. Is there a chance this is the WF-1000XM6? I have doubts. Would Sony move production out of China to Vietnam? Why not just move production back to Malaysia if said the rumoured tariffs will happen? Another possibility is this is an over the ear NC headset which would replace the WH-CH720N which came out in early 2023.
I have checked other certification sites and so far nothing regarding this headset or YY2984. I suspect we will see some more information and certifications soon.
Update 3 - December 21 2024
The earbuds have appeared on TDRA. Strange that we still do not have the YY2984 in any certification, and these earbuds, YY2986 are not on any import filling yet.
Update 2 - December 16 2024
The headset has appeared on the FCC, and we have confirmation that we are indeed looking at a pair of earbuds with noise cancellation. The internal battery is 3.85V. So my hunch is that we are looking at the WF-C700N successor. The headset will feature a flexible PCB antenna like previously. So it seems Sony only prints the antenna on plastic for the higher end models.
The YY2986 in the FCC filing has the addition of Bluetooth LE at 2 Mbps. This was absent in the WF-C700N report. What this change will have on the new model is unknown. The 2 Mbps data rate for Bluetooth LE was added in version 5.0, but even though the WF-C700N lacks this rate in its test report, it still supports Bluetooth 5.2. If anyone knows what the addition of 2 Mbps would bring, leave it in the comments.
The short term confidentiality date is June 14 2025, so the maximum 180 days allowed by the FCC. But there is a good chance we will see these earbuds earlier. Recall the WF-C700N had a short term date of May 20th 2023, FCC appearance on November 21 2022, and revealed on April 3 2023. This is 133 days from FCC to reveal. If we have a similar timeframe for the new model, then we would be looking at a possible reveal date of April 28 2025 +/- one week. So if my guess is close, we are a good 4.5 months away from reveal.
The label document does not reveal much except that the FCC markings are in the manual/packaging. And finally the antenna document lacks any photos of the antenna like previously.
If anyone knows any additional information about this upcoming model, please contact me. Likewise anyone who has access to any of photos in the FCC filings and wishes to share them off the record, please email me.
Update - December 15 2024
This new headset has appeared on Korea's FCC and Canada's Certification website. The Korean certification confirms Vietnam as the place of manufacture. The Canadian certification confirms we have a Noise cancelling headset, but does not specify if it is headphones or earbuds. But there is one clue in the certification which may hint at what we are looking at.
The YY2986 certification labs are identical to the ones seen in the YY2968 certification, which was the WF-C700N. So perhaps this might indicate this is the successor to the WF-C700N, or WF-C710N.
