Sony YY2984 - New Wireless Headset Appears (update 3)

Sony YY2984 WH-1000XM6?

We finally have a new wireless Sony headset code, the YY2984. I have very little information, so this could be anything at this point, like the new WH-1000XM6, WF-1000XM6, or even a low end model. See my where is the Sony WH-1000XM6 post for other details not covered here.

I discovered the model in an import filing, which we can see below.

The description is rather vague but it could indicate an earbud model on account of the "plastic shell", but then it could be a false lead. We will have to wait for future certifications to find out what we are dealing with here. The purchase location is Vietnam, so perhaps a budget model then? Update: The purchaser is Vietnam, but it is not made Vietnam.

We also have some new Airoha/Mediatek SoCs thanks to Google and their compatibility list.

We have a few new Airoha chipsets. The AB157x and AB158x are already known, but the AB159x is new and not even on Airoha's website. I cannot find anything on Google either, but the chipset exists on Bluetooth SIG, showing 3 variants. AB1592, AB1595 and AB1595H. Finally we have the AB1611, but Googling that shows it is an older chip.

The new Mediatek chip is the MT285x, which could be the successor to the MT2833 (Sony V2), but just my speculation at this point. I have no information right now to confirm this. If you see other websites posting about a new V3 and MT2853 after my post, you will know it is just speculation.

So to summarize, new unknown wireless model, could be the WH-1000XM6, WF-1000XM6, or perhaps new WF-C710N (Update, see this post). Could Sony debut a pair of earbuds in their ULT line? Perhaps, but not sure if such a need exists, since the WF-XB700 never received a successor after so many years.

Update 3 - January 20 2025

The headset has finally appeared on a certification site, SDPPI Indonesia. We have confirmation that we are looking at a "Wireless Noise Cancelling Stereo Headset" and that it is made in Malaysia. So far all the  signs point to this being the new WH-1000XM6, and recall that the WH-1000XM5 is also made in Malaysia. Funny enough, the WH-1000XM5 (YY2954) was re-certified under a new certificate as well, 107154/DJID/2025 at the same time. Coincidence?

The recently leaked YY2986 appeared on SDPPI on November 18th and then on the FCC a month later. So should we expect the new WH-1000XM6 to appear on the FCC in middle of February? Or will it appear sooner? I suspect we will see it on Korea's FCC first. Question now is, where is the WF-1000XM6?

Update 2 - December 27 2024

I have been digging deeper into this headset and may have finally identified it. The initial import/export information was not very specific, but now I have determined that Vietnam was the place of import, not export. Meaning, Vietnam was importing the model for certification testing. The actual place of export is Malaysia.

This could mean we are actually looking at the WH-1000XM6, as all previous models were made in Malaysia. With this new information and the headband information from update 1, I am confident that YY2984 is the new WH-1000XM6. Of course until we get a FCC listing, this is still speculation. If anyone with more information wishes to contact me, (on or off the record), please feel free to get in touch via the details on my contact page.

Update 1 - December 24 2024

A new import entry has appeared showing this headset to be a headband variety. Still showing Vietnam, so perhaps this again this could be new the WH-CH730N? The current WH-CH720N came out last year in February, but it is made in China. Would Sony move WH-1000XM6 production to Vietnam? Hmm I have my doubts.

  1. Very exciting news! I'm hoping it's the WF-1000XM6. As I will eventually upgrade from the lovely XM5 in a year or two.

  3. Yay new WH-1000 series headphones
I just hope they fixed the hissing in wired mode... xm5 is useless in wired compared to xm4 for that reason.
I also hope they just make it a XM4 with low noise floor MEMS ANC microphones considering how XM5 was received...
