Sony YY2999 Certified - New Wireless Headset (Update 8)
Lately, I feel like I am only posting up photos of model numbers and nothing more. Anyway, here is another model number, YY2999.
Thankfully we have 2 certifications for this model, one from Mexico and the other from China. Both are wireless certifications, so we know this is a Bluetooth headset and not wired like the IER-G900 or IER-EX15C. Unfortunately neither certification reveals anything specific, so it is rather difficult to guess what this could be.
As more certifications appear, we should get a better understanding of what this could be. An E-ComM certification will at least provide us if we are looking at earbuds or headphones, and if they are equipped with noise cancellation.

This model comes after YY2998, which I wrote about back in June. Whether these are 2 models are somehow connected is unknown. If anyone has any additional information, please contact me.
Update 8 - November 18
The headset has been certified in Canada. This certification does not reveal anything new, but with an appearance in Canada, we should see an FCC filing soon now that the FCC is back up and running. This should finally confirm if this model is indeed a set of earbuds.
Edit, the FCC filing is up, and it confirms that we are looking at a set of earbuds. There is no noise cancellation, so probably an entry model. Could this replace the WF-C510?
The label photo only shows a general representation of the case. The short term confidential end date is May 18 2026, which is exactly 180 days from today (November 19th). This is the longest length of time allowed by the FCC, 180 days. I do believe we will see this model earlier than May 2026.
The antenna is a monopole LDS antenna, similar to what Sony uses on the flagship WF-1000XM5. All previous low to mid level models used a flex PCB antenna. The manufacturer is GTK, which I believe is Goertek, the same company which makes the WF-1000XM5 LDS antenna.
We have a 3.85V lithium battery, and charging is via USB 5V, so no fast charging. The charging case will use USB type-C. The earbuds will use an Airoha chipset, but no model is specified. The WF-C510 used the Airoha AB1563E for its Bluetooth SoC.
That is it from the files. Hopefully more import filings will sppear which will reveal the model name. Until then, we wait. Unless someone knows anything, please contact me with the details.
Update 7 - October 29
This model has appeared on Apple's MFi certification site recently. Unfortunately MFi certifications are not a good indicator of a potential release date. For example the WH-1000XM6's MFi certification was around end of April 2025, about 2-3 weeks before its announcement, where as the WF-C710N MFi certification was from late January 2025, about 2 months before its announcement. The Linkbuds Fit appeared on MFi 4 months before their announcement, and even 2 weeks before their FCC filing. So all we know, if that this model will be compatible with Apple's ecosystem.
While I initially thought this might be the WH-CH520 successor, a recent eComM certification might have just thrown that idea out the window. The certification describes YY2999 as being in the "wireless earphone" category. A similar description was use for the WF-C710N (YY2986) earlier this year.
Strange enough, the LinkBuds Fit was described as "wireless headset" when it appeared on eComM.
So if we are to believe this is another set of earbuds, where would this be positioned? Being made in Vietnam could indicate a low to mid level model, but the WF-C710N just came out earlier this year, with the WF-C510 only 14 months on the market. Unless Sony is planning on replacing the WF-C510 with a newer model with LC3 support? Or could be be a pair of ULT earbuds? Thoughts? If anyone has any information, please contact me.
Update 6 - October 26
We have our first set of import filings for this model. The filing does not reveal the model, but we do have the colours. We have B for black, G for green, V for Violet, and C, which should be beige. Odd we have no white option, but perhaps this list is not complete.
Update 5 - October 17
The model has been certified in South Korea. The certification confirms that this model is made in Vietnam, so this is additional support for a lower end model like the WH-CH520. I find it surprising that this model has had 7 certifications already, but I have yet to find one for YY2998. So either these will not debut together, or the certifications will eventually show up in the next month or 2.
Update 4 - October 13
The model has been certified in Malaysia on E-ComM
Update 3 - October 7
The headset has been certified by TDRA, again confirming this model is just a Wireless Stereo Headset. I am more confident this is the WH-CH520 successor, and not a set of earbuds. The WH-CH520 had a similar certification timeline, September-November 2022, before the announcement in February 2023. I suppose an announcement would be around February/March 2026. The WH-CH720N was announced alongside the WH-CH520, so could we also see the WH-CH730N be announced as well at the same time? Potentially, YY2998 could be WH-CH730N, but we do not have any certifications at this time.
Update 2 - September 29
The headset has been certified in Singapore through IMDA. Unfortunately there is no new additional information about the model in this certification apart from a second confirmation that this model lacks ANC.
Update - September 24
The headset has been certified in Indonesia. The certification reveals that the model lacks any noise cancellation, and that it is made in Vietnam. These details point to an entry model, like the WH-CH520, but we still have 2 more unknown models, YY3006 and YY3008. These unknown models could be non-wireless, so if we do not get any wireless certifications for them in the future, then it would point to YY2999 being a possible successor to the WH-CH520.
