Sony WF-1000XM6 (YY2985) Import Filing (Update)

Sony WF-1000XM6 (YY2985)

Back in May. the internal code for the WF-1000XM6 was revealed by none other than Sony in their Sound Connect app. Since that post, not only has Sony removed any mention of the WF-1000XM6 in the app, they also removed all of the YY codes.

Apart from the information from Sony's app, we had no direct evidence of the WF-1000XM6, until today. An import filing has appeared which shows the WF-1000XM6 (YY2985).

Funny enough, the new earbuds are described as "Headphones without a frame". The new model was imported into Vietnam for testing, and in black. This import filing is a good indicator that we should see the earbuds later this year. I am hopeful we will see an actual certification soon, which will reveal more details.

I know people have been waiting for some information about the new model, but I have not received anything from my sources yet, but at least we know the earbuds are coming.

Bluetooth SoC

I forgot to add this information earlier. I wrote about the Mediatek MT2855 in previous posts, but only the Google Fast Pair compatibility page showed the chip. But a while back, the chipset was finally certified on Bluetooth SIG. There is no certainty we will see this in the new WF-1000XM6, but it would make sense.

Update - July 7

I had another import filing from mid March but it did not provide enough context. But now with a second import filing from early May, it makes more sense. We do not have all of the data in the first photo, but the second photo from another import site does. This filing only recently went up online.

We can see HDX-2985. Sony still uses HDX for their headsets internally, and HDX-2985 is the WF-1000XM6. The import filing looks to be for the paper box which holds the charging case. We have the top, bottom, inner, and accessory tray, along with their measurements. The description includes EVT, which stands for "Engineering Validation Test". From this website (thanks LG), this is the first stage of 3 before a product goes into mass production. Next would come DVT and PVT. DVT is when the model would go for certification. Seeing as these filings are from mid March, I would think Sony has submitted the headset for certification. I hope we see some certifications popping up soon.

Next up, we have this early May import, also using the HDX-2985 code.

This filing has the molds which are used to produce the various parts of the box. The molds are for the box (top), box (bottom), accessorize tray and inner frame. The various sections match the March filing.

The WF-1000XM5 itself has the same parts, the top and bottom boxes, the inner frame to hold the charging case, and underneath, the accessory tray. We are missing the instruction manual tray present in the WF-1000XM5, so perhaps Sony has removed this from the new model. We can use the dimensions from the import filing to compare it to the WF-1000XM5. Unfortunately I do not own a pair of calipers, so the WF-1000XM5 measurements are from my own headset using a ruler, so not 100% accurate.

WF-1000XM6 WF-1000XM5
Box (top) 84 x 70 x 27.5 mm 99 x 66.5 x 26.5 mm
Box (bottom) 84 x 70 x 27.5 mm 99 x 66.5 x 26.5 mm
Inner Frame 81.7 x 67.7 x 26.2 mm 96 x 60.5 x 25 mm
Acc. tray 80.8 x 66.8 x 13.1 mm 95 x 60 x 13 mm

From the table, we can see the box on the new WF-1000XM6 is slightly taller and wider, but the length is less, about 15mm. Using the dimensions of both, here is a comparison photo.

The actual boxes will have rounded corners, which is not possible in the online comparison tool. But what good are case dimensions? Well for one, they reveal that Sony has not decided to go for a different design, ie square case like the LinkBuds Fit. And second, the size of the charging case and earbuds should be similar to the current model. It is definitely possible to make the box smaller. but maintain the similar size of charging case.

We know Sony reduced the battery capacity 12.5%  on the WH-1000XM6 compared to the WH-1000XM5, so it is possible we will see a similar decrease on the WF-1000XM6. Personally, I would rather Sony keep the same batteries, considering newer more efficient components would help increase the battery life.

Btw, if anyone wishes to 3D model some more accurate comparisons, here are the full dimensions for both models.

  • WF-1000XM5 - 99mm x 66.4mm x 53mm
  • WF-1000XM6 - 84mm x 70mm x 55mm

End of update.

  1. Nice to see new rumblings. If you had to make a prediction on price at this stage, what are you thinking?

    1. Sony raised the price of the wh-1000xm6, so I would expect higher price on the new wf xm6

  2. WF, WH, and WI - Interesting! What is Sony's naming scheme really? Wireless Frameless, Headphones, and Interconnected - or what? Anyone knows?

  3. Didn't we always know that the earbuds were coming? The real question has always been when.

  4. Is it pretty much certain it won't be here by August since there is still no FCC filings or does this count?
